    Il dataset raccoglie una vasta selezione di **fotografie storiche** che documentano le principali attività di scavo e restauro condotte nel sito archeologico di Ercolano, a partire dagli interventi a cielo aperto diretti da **Amedeo Maiuri tra il 1927 e il 1961**, fino ai limitati lavori successivi. Le immagini testimoniano anche le campagne condotte nell’area dell’**Antica Spiaggia**, in cui furono rinvenuti oltre 300 scheletri, e documentano episodi di degrado e restauri realizzati dagli anni ’70 del Novecento in poi. Le fotografie furono realizzate dai **fotografi interni della Soprintendenza**. La fase più antica (fino alla metà degli anni ’50) si caratterizza per la qualità tecnica e compositiva delle immagini, scattate su **lastre fotografiche** con particolare cura per inquadrature e illuminazione. A partire dagli anni ’60 si passò all’uso di **pellicole fotografiche**, che permisero un maggior numero di scatti, ma con una qualità visiva generalmente inferiore, dovuta anche all’avvicendarsi di nuovi operatori. Ogni fotografia è corredata da una serie di informazioni, tra cui le **coordinate geografiche** per il corretto posizionamento, oltre a dettagli sul contesto e sul soggetto rappresentato. ### English This dataset contains a wide selection of **historical photographs** documenting the major excavation and restoration activities carried out at the archaeological site of Herculaneum. It includes images from the **open-air excavations led by Amedeo Maiuri between 1927 and 1961**, as well as limited interventions in the following decades. The collection also covers the excavations in the **Ancient Beach area**, where over 300 skeletons were discovered, and records instances of degradation and restoration from the **1970s onward**. The photographs were taken by the **in-house photographers of the Soprintendenza**. The earliest phase (until the mid-1950s) stands out for its technical and compositional quality, using **glass plate negatives** with meticulous attention to framing and lighting. From the 1960s, **photographic film** became the standard, allowing for more extensive documentation, though often with lower image quality, partly due to changes in personnel.
